Soil testing

Questions growers ask the lab

How many samples do I need per paddock?

For a zone test, one composite sample of 20 cores per field or management zone. For grid sampling we take one sample per 2.5 ha, which picks up the variation a variable-rate spreader can act on.

When is the best time to sample?

Sample at the same point each year so results compare, ideally late in summer before the autumn break and at least eight weeks after the last fertiliser or lime application.

Can I collect and send my own samples?

Yes. Untick the collection option and we post you a kit with bags, labels and a loan core sampler. Samples need to reach the lab within four days of collection.

Do non-members pay more?

Non-members pay standard list prices, around 15% above member rates, and don’t receive the free test each season. Turnaround and reporting are the same for everyone.

What format are the prescription maps in?

Shapefile and ISO-XML, which load into most rate controllers. Callum Reid on the precision team can help set the file up on your spreader.

Short on horsepower at sowing?

Tractors, air seeders and sprayers are available by the day or the week.
